The new Joomla 2.5.x version has been around for a while and since Joomla controls over 15% of the websites around the globe, it's obvious that many people would like to create multilingual websites.
But there's a change since Joomla 1.5.x on how multilingual works and that causes a bit of frustration among the web developers.

Let's see what has changed and find out how you can still create a multilingual web site using Joomla with no 3rd party addons (* at the end we are also going to suggest to you a new add on you can use instead of the famous Joomfish.

At first let's start a fresh installation on Joomla 3.0.x

As soon as the installation is finished the next step is to install the next language (besides the default one which is English). You might be able to select your language by hitting "Install languages" in Joomla 3.0.x or you might need to download the new language files from Joomla.org, either way it's a process that most of you are familiar (if not you may ask a question and our staff will help you).

So the first step is done and we have the second language files installed, the next step is to create the content part of the language files, please take a look at the following image.

Make sure you have the right prefixes for your language otherwise you might face issues during the translation.

Our next step is to enable the language plugins within our Joomla admin panel -> Plugin Manager.

The plugins in question are:

  • System Language Filter
  • System Language Code

You might also want to take a look and adjust the settings on those plugins for your convenience.

You may also try the Falang component in order to achieve your goal similar to how you were used to do with JoomFish

You might as well find a new component quite helpfull as it uses Bing translation engine in order to translate your site to any of the supported languages!

You can find it here at JoomlArt : JA Multilingual Component
